Soon the temple of enthusiasm will open its doors to the to the prying eyes of the public. With the gallery having it’s first exhibit this weekend, its only a matter of days until we are well and truly open for business. The Bengkel is in full swing, with beautiful motorcycles taking shape as each day passes. The brand new ‘Deus Cafe’ kitchen is up and running, whipping up fantastically flavorful nourishment in preparation for the upcoming opening. Our early starts and long nights would not happen with out the help of the refined brown liquid that our beloved coffee machine produces. The age old substance that oozes out of that stainless steel masterpiece gives us well needed energy in … View More

Noserider

The waves have been flat and seems like forever since we have had a swell. Judging from these photos taken this morning the Mal’s are having a good time. Roberto, seen here sportin’ some Deus trunks is a great nose rider and one of the best Italian surfers I know. Like most Italians he is very stylish both in and out of the water. He runs his own fashion label ‘Purivida’ and also owns a fantastic vintage clothing store in Obaroi called ‘Pressban.’ If your ever in Obaroi and need a good cuppa Joe stop by Pressban.

Smokin Skull and Studer whip up a quiver of sleek sticks

If you enjoy highly toxic fumes, floating particles of polystyrene and all around general hazards. Join the club. A surfboard factory may be fraught with things that are…well lets just say less than healthy. For me though its a giant playground. I don’t know if its the massive power tools, flammable liquids or untapped creativity that calls to me. Whichever it is, I’m glad it does, because a day in a surfboard factory is a day to remember (or not, depending on how long you spent without a mask.)  The Smokin’ Skull and Luke Studer have been tag-teaming some boards, cleverly combining both applied art and fine art in ways that would overload the senses. Luke has been working on … View More

Carby Tuckwell is not an artist….

Carby Tuckwell says he’s not an artist. I would love to agree with him. The only problem is he kinda is….and when I say ‘kinda’ I mean absolutely, he is the only guy I know who has watched a team paint a full Boeing 747 to his design. Tuckwell, one of Australia’s leading graphic designers, finally said ‘no’ to the corporate grind. Five years ago after a career of graphic design problem solving for commercial giants he threw down the powerpoint presentations and picked up the brush. Years of accumulated creativity and passion exploded forth. At that time he help found Deus ex Machina and since then the walls of Deus  ‘House of Simple Pleasures’ in Sydney have been coated … View More

The Deus Bengkel hitting their stride…

The boys have been in the Temple of Enthusiasm Bengkel for a couple of weeks now and it shows. Moving over and becoming accustomed just came together together like pieces in a well oiled mechanical puzzle I have popped my head through their doors more than a few times this week, and judging by the look on everybody’s faces, im going to assume that it is effectivy ‘go time’ in that general vacinity and let me tell you, hell hath no fury like a disturbed bengkel boy with a blow torch.  Grinding, welding and all around destruction is required to forge magnificent metal steeds. So don’t be put off by the sparks and molten metal, these rides will exit the … View More

Keep It Custom Baby!

So after quite a heavy Saturday night I awoke to the one cloud sky of Bali and decided that I wanted to start something on such a fine day. Something I could continue for more than a few hours here or there. As I struggled through my second helping of mie goreng the idea came to me – a portrait series on people and their bikes. My feeling is someone’s bike, when customized, is pretty much a representation of themselves. Some say owners look like their pets, I think the same applies to some extent in the custom motorcycle scene. Now since I wanted to make this a long term project, I thought I would take things slow on the … View More
