Foam Symmetry

I often contemplate life in the shower. Sometimes I talk to my self, sometimes I answer back. Today I was thinking, “What was the first magazine?” It quite possibly could have been the10 commandments that mosses brought down from the mount. A good read, no adds (well except the obvious one), a little preachy, but all in all well received at the time. From that biblical moment to present day people have used word and pictures to tell stories in the form of books or magazines. Enter “Foam Symmetry” an Australian alternative surf culture mag. Now before you think to yourself, “Oh, another Surf Mag, fantastic”. Foam Symmetry Mag delivers the goods. Minimal adds, creative imagery and stories one can … View More

The Bengkel

There’s always something on the rack in The Bengkel… It’s a distinct smell of gasoline and sweat flowing out from the hand carved entrance, which beckons you back. Like sirens beckoning sailors to the shores rocks. You get the feeling, “are we in the right spot?” At first glance in, you ask your self, “ Is this cool to be in here?” Then, you lock eyes with one of the fabricators who is hiding behind wielding goggles, he flashes a grin your direction, quite possibly with a smoke dangling from his lips, you then know… There are no closed doors at Deus. You are in the right spot… Sparks dance like Firefly’s at dusk. Metal joins metal as the man … View More

Renprats and Soul Brothers

Things are starting to warm up for summer. About time I hear you say or perhaps that was me. Either way the indicators are all there; The swells turned, the winds followed suit, more often than not the suns out. Perhaps not so seasonal is a migration of musicians that we are seeing starting to roll back into town. Speaking of rolling, some people like Reno Pratama are very adept to being atop of some wheels. It’s a toss up whether he’s better known for his skateboard prowess or his musical ability as front man for Renprats and Soul Brothers, either way we’re as proud as punch that we could get together with Stark Beer to bring them down from … View More

Asymmetrical

At first glance, you scratch your head. At second gander, you soak it in. And with your third ponder, you reach out; pick it up, thinking, is this for real? And believe you me; it’s very much alive… By now you’ve had a taste of the images, this is an Asymmetrical creation out from the mind of the mad scientist himself Chris Garrett. First things first, is it for going left or right? Well there are a few thoughts on this subject in Chris’s mind; with the board being asymmetrical you have a combo board, so to speak. The way this one is set up is, if you’re regular footed then you have a slighter wider nose with that falls … View More

Get down on it

All good things come full circle.  In the 60’s, there were the “belly boards” made out of foam and fiberglass with glassed in skegs or fins. Good fun for all that took a lay… In the 70’s and 80’s, we saw the rise of the “boogie board” made from softer foam, or as we now know it, the sponge.  When you realized there was something better, you rose to the occasion or to your feet and started to surf… Well, my good friends, we here at Deus have resurrected, the “belly board”, bringing it full circle. We put our collective heads together with our resident shaper and good mate, Chris   Garrett, and started churning out “belly boards” for all to … View More

Organic Mind opening night

Yesterday afternoon the final hours were upon Mantra Ardhana and his band of helpers, and the question of the moment was, “Just what in the hell is going on in the photo studio?”
The Gallery walls were hung with Mantras art following the theme and title “Organic Mind”…and that’s exactly what it was. Images of bare bodies sprouting foliage, bird-headed humans doing yoga type poses, and Jimmy Hendrix in all shades of life.
But my words don’t do it justice, so you can view them for yourselves. The answer to the major question was solved when Mantra and his Band fired up the projectors, dropped a little video imagery and started playing music that would have caught the attention of … View More

Gemina Lineup

As I walked to the office this morning, coffee in hand, I passed the photography studio and noticed a rather colorful array of boards lined up, leaning on the curved white wall towards the back. I finished up my remaining caffeine hit, photographed the quartet of “Geminas” and then cruised over to the shaping bay where Mr Chris Garrett was, to gather a little more info on them. When asked for a lowdown on the rainbow spread he told me… “The Gemina is a full on twinny inspired by the original designs ridden by Martin Potter in the early eighties, just tweaked to give the performance that is needed for modern carving. An easy entry rocker, a flat deck with … View More

Magnolia Photobooth – Venice House Warming

House warming guests at the Emporium of Postmodern Activities got their fair share of decent and indecent exposure from our buddies at Magnolia Photo Booth Co. Their MagBooth was one of the biggest hits of the party and played an essential role in capturing the excitement around the evening. Most of which was rated PG-13. For language. And brief depictions of sensuality.
