Frequently Asked Questions

1. What Is Deus Ex Machina?

Deus ex Machina is a custom motorcycle company. We design, build and endlessly gas-bag over bikes at the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm in Camperdown, Sydney. There you’ll find our 350sq-m workshop, showroom, accessories store and the renowned Deus Café.

What makes Deus different is that the adventure neither begins nor ends with some tick-the-box, out-the-door ‘custom’ bike. A Deus custom motorcycle builds on modern components, but strips away the plastic panels to begin discovering a soul as unique as its owner’s.

Deus is about celebrating more than a century of tinkering, fidgeting and fettling with motorcycles. Making them simpler, lighter. Faster, or more practical. More colourful, or more complicated. More yours.

The Deus is in the doing.

We just don’t buy the notion that the coolest means the latest. Not when you can create something that’s timeless.

We feel the same way about surfing, bicycles, music, skateboards, art and food. And to those who say you can’t have a foot in each camp (for that would mean having seven feet), we say: phooey.

Our Camperdown hangout regularly resembles a Woodstock of wheeled weirdness. We’ve hosted swap meets and celebrations for not only several different species of motorcycles, but surfboards, bicycles and vintage BMX. Deus Café, open every day, is a moveable feast of eccentrics and experts.

And what we’ve discovered is that the Deus culture of creating, learning and getting involved, isn’t only a sub-strain of Aussie rebellion and resourcefulness. We’ve found homes in Canggu, Bali;Auckland, New Zealand; and Los Angeles, California.

But wherever somebody invests something more than money into their machine, Deus is there, too.

2. So, What Is It? Deuce?

It’s pronounced “day-us ex mack-ena” – meaning “god from the machine.” The pronunciation’s prickly, but the meaning is self-explanatory. Although, the phrase comes from ancient Greek theatre, where a clueless plot would be rescued by a ‘god’ lowered onto the stage, and … oh, okay. Say us, “day-us”.

3. What’s A Deus Motorcycle?

Deus ex Machina takes stock motorcycles, looks deep into their eyes and liberates a soul. The idea has its roots in the British café racer culture of the 1950s, but the aesthetic and engineering have moved on a lot since then. Like, there’s another 60 years of time-travelling to pilfer ideas and parts from.

If you can spout every Brough chassis number and the entire racing curriculum of the late Stanley Woods, we’d love to meet you. But if you know zip about motorcycles and want to ask, we’d like to meet you more.

4. What Else Is Going On Here? Who’s That Rockabilly Guy? What’s That Noise? What Does That Button Down There Do? What Makes The Wind?

There’s always something going on around here, a lot of it unplanned. Best thing is to follow our blog  or subscribe to our newsletter, The Oily Rag here.
