Magnolia Photobooth – Venice House Warming

House warming guests at the Emporium of Postmodern Activities got their fair share of decent and indecent exposure from our buddies at Magnolia Photo Booth Co. Their MagBooth was one of the biggest hits of the party and played an essential role in capturing the excitement around the evening. Most of which was rated PG-13. For language. And brief depictions of sensuality.

The House Warming

They came. They saw. They loved it. The Emporium of Postmodern Activities’ inaugural house warming soiree saw close to 1000 people walk through its freshly finished doors to share in Deus Ex Machina’s latest horn of plenty. Guests fueled up on hot-off-the-grill sausages from local favorite Wurstküche and expertly pulled espresso offerings from downtown L.A.’s Handsome Roasters before knocking back the first of several thousands beers for the night. Entertainment came from several different angles with set lists from Ry Cummings, Devil’s Gravy, and Restavrant, the surprise world premier of Jimmy James’ film, “Tracking,” some goofy face time with Magnolia Photobooth Co., and a late night dance session with DJ Sidwho?. Over in the store, the cash register got its … View More

Post Emporium

The building of Deus Ex Machina’s Emporium of Postmodern Activities will be remembered as one of the most awesome construction endeavors in the history of mankind; so long as that history dates back exactly one week from today and precludes any construction that occurred the same week outside 1001 Venice Blvd. Disclaimer aside, it was still a very big, very intense, lift with your legs, sweat through your shirt type deal. General Managers Julian Heppekausen and Ben Monroe, along with Deus senior varsity member Stefan Wigand oversaw the transformation of the former florist into a wonderland of wood, glass, concrete, metal, gasoline, fiberglass, foam, leather, fabric, and naturally, flowers. Ramland Construction crew members Gordo (The Screw Up), Juan (The Carpenter), … View More

The Hangover

The United Nations of Deus held their first annual Sin City Summit at the Capsule show last weekend in the brisk climes of the Nevada desert. Critical agenda items included sample viewings of the new Deus collection from designer Jason Bleick, state dinners with key members of RAEN Optics and Jack of All Trades, and the creation of an emergency, multi-national task force to re-enact the first fifteen minutes of The Hangover (FFMTH). The official FFMTH report, written in lipstick on a bar napkin, was lost at the dry cleaners. Subsequently, the FFMTH unanimously backed the commissioning of a second, emergency, multi-national task force, dubbed GUTHOV (Get Us The Hell Out of Vegas), to provide the FFMTH members safe passage … View More

Get down on it

All good things come full circle.  In the 60’s, there were the “belly boards” made out of foam and fiberglass with glassed in skegs or fins. Good fun for all that took a lay… In the 70’s and 80’s, we saw the rise of the “boogie board” made from softer foam, or as we now know it, the sponge.  When you realized there was something better, you rose to the occasion or to your feet and started to surf… Well, my good friends, we here at Deus have resurrected, the “belly board”, bringing it full circle. We put our collective heads together with our resident shaper and good mate, Chris   Garrett, and started churning out “belly boards” for all to … View More

Organic Mind opening night

Yesterday afternoon the final hours were upon Mantra Ardhana and his band of helpers, and the question of the moment was, “Just what in the hell is going on in the photo studio?”
The Gallery walls were hung with Mantras art following the theme and title “Organic Mind”…and that’s exactly what it was. Images of bare bodies sprouting foliage, bird-headed humans doing yoga type poses, and Jimmy Hendrix in all shades of life.
But my words don’t do it justice, so you can view them for yourselves. The answer to the major question was solved when Mantra and his Band fired up the projectors, dropped a little video imagery and started playing music that would have caught the attention of … View More

Gemina Lineup

As I walked to the office this morning, coffee in hand, I passed the photography studio and noticed a rather colorful array of boards lined up, leaning on the curved white wall towards the back. I finished up my remaining caffeine hit, photographed the quartet of “Geminas” and then cruised over to the shaping bay where Mr Chris Garrett was, to gather a little more info on them. When asked for a lowdown on the rainbow spread he told me… “The Gemina is a full on twinny inspired by the original designs ridden by Martin Potter in the early eighties, just tweaked to give the performance that is needed for modern carving. An easy entry rocker, a flat deck with … View More

The Hair Force heads West

With the upcoming and arduous task of the opening the Venice Beach “Deus Ex Machina” AKA “The Emporium of Post-Modern Activates” the call was sent out, “Bring in the Big Guns”, or in our case “The Hair-Force” and that is just what we did. Bali Expats Jimmy James and Salsa jumped in a steel bird made the leap of faith across the pond, to meet up with Ellis Erison and bring the Bali flare to the Venice beach folks. First things first, grab boards and surf then shirts off, fringe cuts and ride custom Deus cycles around town letting all those wondering just who these wondering Aussies were, and in no way were they lost…if anything they were right at … View More
